Frequently Asked Questions

What is freecheckprint.com?

freecheckprint.com is a free online template tool for printing business checks on your printer.

What kind of paper do I need?

Checks are formatted to be printed on the top third of a US letter page. With that in mind, standard 20 to 24-pound bond paper will generally work. You can print on plain white paper, and cut the check out after printing, or you can use common .

What kind of printer do I need?

Most high quality inkjet and laser printers should work.

What browser should I use?

Chances are that the one you're using right now will work just fine. We've built freecheckprint.com to work with most modern browsers.

Is it really free?

Yes. freecheckprint.com is supported by the advertising you see on the site. (So, please no ad blockers.)

How do I sign up?

There's no signup and no accounts on freecheckprint.com. Enter the information to print, and download a PDF file to print. That's it.

Will checks produced with freecheckprint.com work with my bank?

We cannot guarantee that checks produced with freecheckprint.com will work with your (the paying) bank or financial institution, nor the depositor's bank or financial institution. However, we take many steps to make the checks compatible with the US banking system. If you need confirmation that a check produced with freecheckprint.com will be accepted, please provide a sample to your bank before using it.

Can I produce negotiable instruments formatted for non-US use?

No, freecheckprint.com is only intended for use in the US for US business bank accounts.

Why do I need to re-enter information each time I use the freecheckprint.com?

The business reason: Because this is a printing template tool intended for occasional use. If you are printing high volumes of checks, there are other tools (e.g., your bookkeeping software) which are probably better suited to your needs.

The technical reason: We don't save your data anywhere but your computer. freecheckprint.com doesn't have accounts or even a sign-in page.

Can I use this to print a check to myself from a customer's (or anyone else's) account?

No.

Can I use freecheckprint.com on a mobile device?

freecheckprint.com is designed for use on a desktop browser.

Do I need to manually sign the printed paper check?

Absolutely. A check is not valid negotiable instrument until it is signed by the maker.

What about the back and "security features"?

Sellers of preprinted check stock may include convenience and security features on the front and back of paper check stock, but these are not required. Since the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (a/k/a Check 21) went in to effect in 2004, checks have been generally processed as digital images. For this reason, features like embedded foil, heat sensitive ink, and microprinting may provide limited real-world security. It's your signature and other key items on the front of the check that make it a negotiable instrument, not these security features. That said, you can buy many types of check stock to use with freecheckprint.com that have different types of security features. This will cost more than basic check stock. Here's one example: High Security Check Stock with foil holograms.

I see that the "fraction" routing number is not included. Is this a problem?

No, the fraction routing number is a historical artifact from the days of manual check processing. The routing number in the MICR line (numbers & symbols on the bottom) is used today by the US banking system to process the check. The fraction is not required by the US banking system, and is not included in the freecheckprint.com template.

I'm not sure I should use this service.

If you're not clear on exactly what this tool is for and it's limitations, you should probably purchase checks from a commercial check printer or your bank.
